In an increasingly globalised world, civil wars and other forms of intrastate violent conflict are ever less treated by the outside world as domestic affairs. Ending violence, transforming conflicts and building peace in countries suffering from internal strife have become legitimate objectives of external state and non-state actors – driven by a broad range of motivations.
The seminar reviews the recent history of international peacebuilding efforts and their success record, introduces key concepts and theories employed by the various actors involved, discusses schools of thought and practice, and looks into case studies that illustrate diverse contexts of, and approaches to, conflict transformation and peacebuilding.
The seminar is taught in five blocks, one of which will be held at the German Development Institute (DIE) in Bonn. The first seminar meeting is on 23 October, the other dates are 13 November, 11 December, 15 January (Bonn) and 29 January.
