This course will give students an introduction to the ‘social problem novel’ of the British Nineteenth Century. We will hope to gain an overview of the key literary, cultural and sociopolitical movements of the Victorian era through the reading and discussion of literary texts. Our analysis of the core texts will be supplemented by short introductory lectures which will provide the necessary context for further discussion. This will lead us to examine representations of the Nineteenth Century in Victorian Literature by focusing on themes central to this period of great change in society, including the Industrial Revolution, social inequality and education.
Students should purchase the following texts and have read the first chapter of Hard Times ready for discussion in the first week:
- Course Reader (available from the copy shop Shug und Real at Reckhammerweg 4 by the first week of the semester)
- Charles Dickens, Hard Times (Oxford University Press, 2008) ISBN: 9780199536276
- Elizabeth Gaskell, Mary Barton (Oxford University Press, 2008) ISBN: 978-0199538355
