Even in the 21st century, our critical assessment of literary texts, and the arts in general, is still very much shaped against the backdrop of a long tradition of critical theory. Names such as Plato, Pope, Marx and Freud have fundamentally formed our modern critical apparatus. In this course we will have a look at the way critical theory has evolved over the ages, taking into account historical development such as political, philosophical, cultural and also personal contexts. A better understanding of critical theory is essential for a proper understanding of literary texts, as both theory and practice are mutually interdependent.
A digital reader with relevant texts will be provided via Moodle at the beginning of the semester. |
