The seminar aims to provide insights into recent discussions in narratology and will engage with a number of central questions: How, fundamentally, do narratives "work"? What are functions of narrative? In which societal fields does narrative play a crucial role? How do narratives relate to the media in which they appear? What is the connection between narratives and individual as well as collective identities? We will begin with Albrecht Koschorke's magisterial Wahrheit und Erfindung: Grundzüge einer allgemeinen Erzähltheorie (3rd. ed.; Frankfurt: S. Fischer, 2013). Students are expected to purchase and read the 3rd edition of Wahrheit und Erfindung before the semester begins. Everyone who has done so for the first session is guaranteed a place in the seminar. Further texts will be supplied in the course of the semester. |
