Families as basic units in social organization have often been a battleground in American culture wars, where practice and ideology or subversion and hegemony clash. In this regard, their medial representations take on new meanings as both liberating, legitimizing and even stifling forces of cultural power. In this course we will discuss the role of families in wider cultural discourse before moving onto practical analyses of television portrayals of families. In doing so, we shall investigate in how far the traditional nuclear family is being challenged by other family constellations, such as single-parent, same-sex, and patchwork households.
A subscription to Netflx for the length of the course is required. There is an opportunity to split subscriptions among course participants, which can be discussed in the first session. |
