Contrastive linguistics (CL) is a form of comparative linguistics which focuses on a pair of languages, e.g. English and German, by systematically analyzing and describing their differences and similarities. Even though English and German are historically related to one another, their grammars surprisingly reveal great differences. The traditional levels of syntax, sound and lexis will help us to establish this contrast. By looking at specific examples, e.g. word order, ‘false friends’, and the foreign accent in English and German, students will become familiar with major theories in the field. This class takes a closer look at the linguistic differences between English and German and arises issues related to cross-cultural and cross-linguistic interaction between speakers of both languages. Furthermore, there will be a focus on foreign language learning as we will uncover typical errors of language learners and how they can be predicted and solved. Readings will be made available online. |
