Thanks to David Cameron we know that we should treat utterances, such as, 'the flood of asylum seekers' with a pinch of salt. But how do we know that this is an instance of racism? The aims of this seminar are to analyse the social, cultural, and linguistic effects of transnational flows of people across national borders. We will study critically the way news in the press contribute to 'racism'. You will learn how to apply principles of Critical Discourse Analysis to a range of written texts and how to analyse how immigration touches upon notions of identity, ethnicity, and belonging. You will be encouraged to collect your own data from all available sources (e.g., television, internet, newspapers). |
