This seminar assesses international trade and trade policy in a multipolar world. The course uses the issue-area of trade to examine broad theoretical concepts in political science, including cooperation between states, collective action and the paradoxes of domestic politics. Among other topics, we will cover the individual and state interests with regards to trade liberalization, the roles of developing countries as well as emerging economic powers such as India and China, debates and controversies surrounding the GATT/WTO, the proliferation of preferential agreements, including mega-regional trade deals, and issues such as environmental and labour standards. |
