The Sociology of Developing Countries is concerned with understanding the development path countries in the Global South have taken. This is an important evolving area of investigation in Sociology. Studying the Sociology of Developing Countries will allow you to understand the world in a more global context, as a large portion of the global population reside in these countries. It will give you a historical context in which these nations have taken in achieving development. The course will enable you analyze various programmes and policies put forward by those who are making decisions about ‘developing’ countries. The course will look at the social and political effects of the programmes and policies.
The aim of the course is to expose you to the knowledge of developing countries as it relates to Africa, Asia and Latin America. The course examines major theorists and school of thought in Sociology. It expounds on the concepts, theory building and verification of classical, modern and post-modern theories.
At the end of this course, the student should be able to know and understand:
- The concept of Development and Under Development.
- Development Theories.
- North-South Economic Divide.
- The Problem of Global Inequality.
Note:
- The course is offered in English.
- Every class meeting will have an English written text to be discussed.
- Every student has to hold a class presentation.
- There will be an assignment written in English (Seminararbeit) at the end of the course.
