This cultural studies seminar provides a critical hands-on introduction to the colonial heritage in museums and archives. In the introductory section, students will familiarise with the history of a range of new and old museums across the Anglophone world (including the British Museum, the Wisbech & and Fenland Museum, and the Australian National Museum), and discuss some of the controversial issues involved, such as repatriation of Indigenous things. Moreover, participants explore real as well as virtual museums on our doorstep, tracing the colonial legacy in Essen (essen.colonialtracks.de) and elsewhere.
