What is Linguistics and how does the study of language relate to the real world? Can linguistic findings be applied to practical issues, or is linguistics just a theoretical attempt to better understand language and human communication? Applied Linguistics and its orientation towards the study of real, everyday language use will be the focus of this class. Applied Linguistics deals with language as social and cultural practice, and is concerned with issues ranging from aspects of linguistic and communicative competence, first or second language acquisition, bilingualism, literacy, language disorders, etc. to language and communication related problems in and between societies as well as. We shall focus on three key issues relevant to the study of language and cultural context as well as language learning: 1. we shall discuss the field of applied linguistics with a special focus on its relevance for the study of language use in social and cultural contexts; 2. we shall discuss aspects of cultural studies (in the past commonly referred to as "Landeskunde") and explore the relationship of language (use) and socio-cultural context; 3. we shall discuss how findings in applied linguistics and cultural studies can be applied to the study of language and language teaching. |
