When there is no word for it in English, why not just invent one? Lexicology is the branch of linguistics which studies words, rules of their composition and relations between words. This class will take students to both a diachronic and synchronic journey through the English lexicon and look at how words came into the English language, how meanings have changed over time and which processes have influenced and shaped present-day English(es). Furthermore, aspects of word formation, lexicography as well as cognitive approaches to the mental lexicon will be raised. |
