Words are the building blocks of language and at the same time the very core of language. Therefore, vocabulary is central to language teaching, which Wilkins nicely summarizes in his famous quote “while without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed” (Wilkins, 1972). Yet, vocabulary is much more than just single words. So what does it actually mean to know or to learn vocabulary? And how can teaching support this learning process?

In the first part of the seminar, we will start by revising and defining key concepts and then continue with a discussion of theories of processing, storing and recalling vocabulary, which will provide us with the basic insights for more detailed vocabulary analyses as well as for the discussion of selection criteria. Based on this theoretical grounding, we will have a critical look at the mentioning of vocabulary in the official guiding sources for teachers in North-Rhine-Westfalia and discuss respective approaches and methods to vocabulary teaching as well as strategies for vocabulary learning.

In the second part of the seminar, we will put theory into practice and look into the vocabulary work in schoolbooks currently used for teaching English at different school levels and in other published material or tools for vocabulary learning. We will critically reflect upon the chances and challenges of the existing material and come up with respective suggestions for its implementation or for improvements and the development of new (adapted) material.
