This lecture course in cultural and literary studies will be concerned with the lasting impact that the events of September 11, 2001 have had on the U.S. American nation. From novels and stories to films and songs, from essays to political speeches, from media reports to statistics, from laws to political movements, and from monuments to museums, we will examine ways in which Americans have tried to come to terms with and react to the new situation after 9/11. We will ask: In which ways is the U.S.A. a different country now, in the post-9/11 era?
A reader containing all the texts with which we will deal in this class will be available from the copy shop at Reckhammerweg 4 after the first class meeting. First class meeting: October 24, 2016. |
