During the high age of imperialism, the concept of „race“ became very important. Not only did scientists try to categorize different peoples into groups perceived as “racially different”, these categorizations manifested in cultural products as well. First and foremost among them where adventure novels. We will have a closer look at “race” as a concept as well as historical racism and how it developed in the British colonial context. Authors like Henry Rider Haggard, Rudyard Kipling and Arthur Conan Doyle will be examined.
