In this course, the process of European integration will be looked at from a historical perspective. Starting from the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the course traces the most important steps of this process including the ECSC, the European Economic Community (EEC), the Treaty of Maastricht and the Lisbon Treaty.
The first main objective of the course is to familiarize students with the history of European integration. Since the establishment of the ECSC, scholars have sought to explain and predict the processes of regional integration. In the context of European integration, political processes are intertwined with theoretical advancement. Hence, the second main objective is to acquaint students with the most important theories seeking to explain European integration (e.g. neo-functionalism and liberal intergovernmentalism). |
