This course primarily concerns the nature of consciousness. What is consciousness? Is it possible to understand consciousness within a naturalistic framework? In the first half of this course, we’ll critically survey central approaches to these questions in contemporary analytic philosophy, using the third edition of Jaegwon Kim’s Philosophy of Mind. In the second half of this course, we’ll closely investigate one of the most influential objections to the idea that it is possible to offer a complete naturalistic analysis of consciousness, by carefully working through an important recent monograph from a prominent critic of naturalism in the philosophy of mind – From the Knowledge Argument to Mental Substance by Howard Robinson. |
