This course/seminar will begin on April 25, 2017.
The seminar will primarily deal with the links between conflict in general, violent conflict in particular, and structures and mechanisms of Governance. Of lesser importance will be the results of both for "human security".
Too often, violent conflict has been analysed mostly in regard to the problem of violence. But in many types of violent conflict (civil war, insurgencies, terrorism, "hybrid war", etc.) violence primarily is a symptom, not the cause of the ongoing confrontation. While dealing with symptoms still can be important at times, it should not distract from analysing the underlying causes and conflict dynamics. And in this reagrd, both socio-economic conditions and the problem of Governance in a specific society often are decisive.
The seminar will concentrate on two types of violent conflict (insurgencies and terrorism), and on two case studies (Afghanistan, Iraq).
The seminar will not be held in German, but in the English language.
