In this seminar we will attempt to shed some light on what makes a novel global. Is it a combination of different settings, far apart on the map but closely linked in the mind of the narrator? Or is a global novel defined by how it addresses global issues, such as climate change, migration and inequality? In how far can these novels map out a city or landscape that the reader is not familiar with and could it be possible that a fictional narrative might, through these interwoven processes, provide more insight than a seemingly objective text? Your ideas, input and impressions will be a vital part of the seminar.
Author Tendai Huchu will visit us during the course of the semester for a workshop and a reading and will try to help us answer some of these questions.
Please purchase and read the following three novels prior to the beginning of the seminar. Remember to support your local bookshop!
