Gendered literature is not a new phenomenon. The Victorian Age saw a huge increase in gender-specific stories. Boys’ stories tended to be adventurous, active and fun, whereas girls’ stories focussed more and more on Victorian feminine domesticity. This seminar will give an overview on how children’s literature developed in the 19th century, and will have a closer look at Lewis Carroll’s famous stories about a young girl named Alice and her visits to “Wonderland”, and how her character managed to break gender stereotypes.
Students are asked to buy and read before the start of the seminar: Carroll, Lewis. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking- Glass. London: Penguin Classics, 2011. (ISBN-13: 978-0141439761). Additional texts will be made available in the first week. |
