Students are advised to look at the following link to get started:

We'll cover a range of 19th, 20th, and 21st century short story writers, including Hawthorne, Twain, Cather, Henry James, O.Henry, Porter, Anderson, Parker, Singer, and Ozick. Students are requested to find a favorite short story to bring in for class analysis. The general focus will be on defining what we mean by the term "short story," and what the "American" traits of the stories we will read are. Often but not always, a short story concerns one incident and one character with a particular conflict that must be addressed or resolved, and a climax or turning point. As you read, consider whether the stories we cover meet these general expectations or create new standards of their own. A reader will be provided, and students are required to purchase The Best American Short Stories of the Century, ed. John Updike --Expanded edition. (Houghton-Mifflin) Also recommended, but not required: The Best American Short Stories 2016. |
