This course is a theoretical and practical introduction to language variation and change in English from a quantitative sociolinguistic perspective. We will investigate the ways in which linguistic and social factors motivate and structure patterns of linguistic variation. To do so, we will overview the dominant approaches to studying variation, including both foundational studies and new directions in sociolinguistic research. Students will conduct original quantitative research on phonological, lexical, morphosyntactic, and/or discourse variation. |
