Starting from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein this course begins by establishing the literary history and context of the Gothic. It then explores the development and evolution of science fiction and fantasy from their shared roots towards their massive expansion and transformation in the twentieth century, concluding with a look at some of the genre innovations of the early twenty-first century. In advance of the first session students should read Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner and the opening Letters section of Frankenstein. |
