In this seminar students will be introduced to the social, political and cultural life and situation of Native American living in present-day United States. Since most Natives live on reservations far from larger cities, they remain invisible to mainstream society. Whenever they appear in our collective memory, they are often reduced to Casinos on reservations, tourist attractions, “drunken Indians,” Pocahontas or as Mascots for the Washington Redskins or Cleveland Indians. In our discussions we will critically look at distinct Native-American stereotypes and selected civil rights efforts by Native Americans to preserve their culture, language and identity. Goal of this seminar is to provide students a critical insight into hopes, wishes and demands of one of the most disadvantaged minority groups in the USA.
