Music is a fertile ground for sociological observation, as it touches diverse aspects of social life. It creates communities, can be an expression of power, molds opinions, elicits emotion, and the list goes on. This course will introduce students to the sociological study of music and the different ways sociologists have approached music in the 20th-21st centuries. More specifically, we will look at how music consumption has been used to study cultural inequalities, how gender studies have influenced the sociology of music, and how different musical genres are studied from a sociological perspective. Students will have the opportunity to train their observation skills with a short field study of their own, by looking at their own consumption of music and that of their peers. The course will be taught in English. |
