Percival Everett is one of the most prolific and profound current US-American writers. According to Kristin Leigh Moriah, as a “[m]aster storyteller and trickster, he is adept at telling tales that at once call attention to and away from the problems of race in America.” In his satirical fiction he constantly challenges notions and concepts of race, blackness, the author, language and many more. In this course we will read three of Everett’s most recent and famous novels, Glyph, Erasure, and I Am Not Sidney Poitier, enriching our reading with diverse scholarship to fully grasp the extent of Everett’s work.
Students are asked to purchase (and begin to read) the following books before the first session:
- Everett, Percival. Erasure: A Novel. (2001) Minneapolis, MN: Graywolf Press, 2011. Print.
- Everett, Percival. Glyph: A Novel. (1999) Minneapolis, MN: Graywolf Press, 2014. Print.
- Everett, Percival. I Am Not Sidney Poitier: A Novel. Saint Paul, MN: Graywolf, 2009. Print.
