The course aims to explore and examine the ways in which spoken language present with intricate patterns of variation and change. The course will build an understanding of English phonetics and phonology, which provides the foundation for examining the way in which language use varies within societies, in relation to factors such as: region or place; key sociological variables like age, gender, class and ethnicity; and contextual aspects like styles and relations between speakers. Theoretically, the students will engage with key texts in the development of linguistic variation and sociophonetics. The course will have a practical component where students will learn how to work with spoken language and how to analyse variation acoustically. |
