On June 23 2016, Britain voted to leave the European Union. Nobody, not even the politicians who supported the leave campaign, could fathom the ramifications of that outcome.
In this seminar we will retrace the steps that let to this vote. We will also concentrate on the current state affairs regarding Britain's newly found splendid isolation. Furthermore, we will investigate the construction of national identities in general and English national identities in particular, concentrating on the common collective symbols and icons, on the traditional “other without”, e.g. Scotland and Europe, as well on the “other within”, e.g. the immigrants from Asia and the Caribbean. We will base our discussion on a whole variety of media ranging from essays and poems to videos documenting sports events and great national happenings such as the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. |
