Philip Larkin was a major twentieth-century poet whose poems continue to be both engaging and provocative. His work is mostly traditional in terms of form. However, what he wrote about was modern life, its hopes and discontents: How do you think and feel about ex-lovers, why are children not always happy about their parents, is work something that squats on our lives like a poisonous toad?
Larkin is a poet we can easily relate to; his language is straightforward, and the the world he wrote about is one is not yet too far away from ours. Therefore, this course is not only for poetry enthusiasts but equally for those who would like to get a bit more practice when it comes to doing things with poems.
A reader will be available from the usual place in Reckhammerweg. Requirements: thorough preparation for each session, active participation, and, if applicable, written work according to your particular Studienordnung. As always: think, enjoy (!), annotate, and look things up if necessary. |
