Rowling's story of "the boy who lived" has influenced a whole generation of readers and, simultaneously, become a major media phenomenon and something like a merchandising gold-mine. In this seminar we will analyse and discuss the Harry Potter saga from various theoretical viewpoints, among them questions of gender, class, religion and identity. We shall of course also evaluate Rowling's novels as cultural artefacts and their significance in the literary world. Important!: This is a seminar for avid readers (or "approved" Harry Potter afficionados) as you will be expected to be closely familiar with all seven Harry Potter books (and ideally the play as well) at the beginning of term! There will be a reader (available at the copyshop on Reckhammerweg from early October onwards) containing theoretical texts for the individual sessions. These will serve as a basis for our discussions. Any British edition of the primary texts will do, but it will make finding passages easier if you have the latest Bloomsbury paperbacks. |
