Sociocultural linguistics is an interdisciplinary approach that encompass a broad range of theories and research methods for the study of language in its sociocultural context. The main theme of the course concerns different approaches to researching urban multilingualism, diversity, mobility and the youth. This course will be organised around three main paradigms, with specific topics:
Paradigm 1 – Sociology of language; focus on society (Sociology). Main topic: linguistic landscapes.
Paradigm 2 – Variationist sociolinguistics; focus on linguistic form (Linguistics). Main topic: linguistic variation and multiethnolects (varieties vs. style approach).
Paradigm 3 – Ethnography of Speaking; focus on culture and meaning (Anthropology). Main topic: urban youth languages and styles. |
