  • Reading assignment (every week)

There are two mandatory readings every week. This course is held based on the readings and the presentation, so please read them before the class, and prepare for comments/questions before coming to the class. I also put “further readings” for those who are interested for each session (please refer to the following page for the class schedule)

Bemerkung

  • Course description

In 2018, the Japanese government has decided to implement the Japanese immigration bill to facilitate the entrance of foreign migrants/workers. The country is/has been considered itself as “non-migration” country, and this policy change could be a shift for Japan. However, it does not mean that there were no foreign residents/workers in this country before this change. In this course, we will look at various cases of foreign workers/residents in this country.

  • Course objectives

This course is a part of the Module “Institutions and Organizations in Japan.” This course targets MA and the later stage of BA students. Though the main topic of this class is migration (to Japan), this course aims at reading academic articles critically and to write a paper at the end of the semester.

  • Class format

This class is a paired module with “Research on Japanese Institutional Change,” and you are required to participate in both classes.

This course follows seminar-style, mainly with (a) student’s presentation(s) and discussion following the presentation. The discussion will be based on the student’s presentation.

Leistungsnachweis
  • Reading presentation (at least one per student, depending on the number of course participants)

On the first week of the semester, you will choose a session in which you present a reading (mandatory reading for each session). A presenter for each session should prepare a presentation approximately 15-20 minutes. The presentation should include not only main points of the material, but also your (critical) points of views to it and provide discussion questions.

  • Paper presentation

Each student has a presentation about the final paper in the last week of the semester. The paper presentation should not be long (app. 10 minutes). It will be mentioned more detail in the first session regarding the paper presentation and the final paper.

  • Final paper

You are required to write a final paper (app. 15 pages) BEFORE 16th. August.2019. The paper presentation is supposed to be based on this final paper. For a writing style, please check “Guideline for Writing Assignments” in Moodle.

Since this course is paired module with “Research on Japanese Institutional Change” you will only have to write ONE paper for the two courses (one paper presentation). Please send the final paper to both Mr. Takata (kei.takata@uni-due.de) and me (aimi.muranaka@uni-due.de).
