Self-presentation, particularly in social media, is of central importance to contemporary media culture. In literature too authors make increasing use of autobiography and related forms to stage and narrate their lives in book-form. In this seminar, we will look at a range of life writing from contemporary literature and genre theory in order to trace shared aesthetic and narrative techniques as a counter-movement to selfie-culture. Selected readings will include autobiographies from established novelists (Paul Auster, J.M. Coetzee, Rachel Cusk,), hybrid forms such as graphic memoirs (Alison Bechdel) and autobiographical essay (Maggie Nelson). The reading list will be announced in the first session. |
