The present course is concerned with types of English which evolved in the past two centuries in the southern half of the anglophone world. For the purposes of this seminar this also includes the anglophone areas of Asia, e.g. India, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines. The southern hemisphere in the strict sense includes a number of countries which can be divided into major and minor ones. Among the former are South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Among the latter are the Falkland Islands, Tristan da Cunha and various island locations in the Southern Pacific (including Hawaii). The purpose of the seminar is to examine different kinds of English, to see how they arose historically and to examine the function of English in the present-day societies of the Southern Hemisphere which use English in every-day life.
