This seminar is an introduction to the academic discipline of Peace Studies and explores various aspects of intra-state violence; the most common type of conflict in modern times. The course first reviews central terminology and issues associated with conflict, war, violence and peace in order to build a theoretical foundation and provide students with a set of analytical skills. A second part then considers the root causes and dynamics of intra-state conflicts, as well as the means of external and internal actors to intervene within the scope of conflict prevention, conflict resolution and conflict transformation. In the final part, we will round up our understanding of Peace and Conflict Studies by learning about the aftermath of violence and prevalent characteristics of post-conflict societies, as core themes such as reconciliation and justice will be addressed. All course content will be illustrated through engagement with historical and contemporary case studies focusing predominantly on the Latin American region and, to a lesser extent, Africa and Asia. |
