Recent political developments in the UK, US, and elsewhere suggest deep insecurities about people’s economic circumstances and concerns about job availability, affordable housing, education, health care, and the impact of migration and refugees on society.
This discussion-based block seminar examines literature, investigative journalism, and theoretical texts dealing with poverty, wealth inequality, and the perception of economic hardship. Students will gain insights into growing anxieties about individual access to membership in the middle class and the implications of such anxieties for the rise of populism.
On the syllabus are texts investigating poverty by George Orwell, John Steinbeck, Darren McGarvey, and Barbara Ehrenreich, as well as a number of theoretical texts. |
