The course provides an introduction to the political system of Germany geared towards incoming students as well as domestic students interested in discussing well-known topics in English. These topics include the economic and social foundations the German system, e.g. demographics, the economic model and the welfare state. In this course, we trace the historical developments towards democracy after the Second World War resulting in a specific constitutional and institutional order. Based on this constitutional order, students will be familiarized with the most important institutions of the political system (polity). In this context, we will also discuss the specificities of German federalism, interest representation and party system. Formal institutional aspects will be complemented with informal norms to gain a comprehensive perspective on policy making processes in Germany (politics). |
