This seminar deals with Western women who travelled to the 'Orient.' Students will first be provided with an in-depth introduction to the genre of travel writing, as well as the field of Orientalism through the lense of critics such as, Edward Said, Dennis Porter, Reina Lewis, Sara Mills and Meyda Yegenoglu. We will then read and analyse texts by women writers from the 18th to the 21st centuries, including (but not limited to) Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's The Turkish Embassy Letters, Freya Stark's Baghdad Sketches and Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love.
Course reader (Copyshop Reckhammer Weg) and Online Semesterapparat will be available from 18 October. |
