Although children have been around for a while now, the invention of the phase that we call childhood is rather recent. So is the genre of children’s literature. Beloved characters like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Little Lord Fauntleroy and Black Beauty all came to life in the 19th century and continue to inspire children today. But how did the genre develop? And are there major differences between children’s literature of the 19th century and today? We will have a look at the genre in general, identify common themes and differences, and will have a special look how gender roles were, and are, portrayed. A reader will be made available in the first session. |
