Norman Klein is a unique figure in contemporary urban studies: As an urban historian, media theorist, novelist and media artist, he combines scholarship, documentary fiction and media arts in highly innovative explorations of 20th- and 21st-century urban developments, particularly in the U.S. We will discuss his monograph The History of Forgetting: The Erasure of Memory in Los Angeles, his multi-media fictions Bleeding Through: Layers of Los Angeles 1920-1986 and The Imaginary 20th Century as well as selected essays. A reader with an initial selection of texts will be available in the copyshop in Reckhammerweg from early September onwards. Participants are expected to have read the first two texts for the first session. |
