This e-learning discussion-based seminar explores the nature and causes of wars in the 20thand 21stcenturies and investigates the potential for resolving conflicts and building peace. By examining a wide range of literature and film on the subject, students acquire a deeper understanding of contemporary conflicts and their impact on society and on the refugee situation. Further, students acquire tools for understanding conflict resolution, peace-making processes, reconciliation and restorative justice. On the syllabus are texts/films by Hemmingway, Orwell, Weir, Spielberg, Loach, Burns, O’Brien, Junger, Yazbek, Pearlman, and Hedges. Readings will need to be completed prior to the start of each session. Some texts will be made available in electronic form; a few texts will need to be purchased. To participate online, students will require an internet connection and, preferably, a set of regular headphones. Assessment will involve class discussion, participation, written assignments, and oral presentations.
The seminar will meet weekly online on Tuesdays, 8-10. The introductory session (only) will be held in-person on Tuesday, October 15, 14-16.
