The depiction of the risk of terrorism across media and fictional narratives is tied to fears and typecasting of otherness and cultural difference, religious or political fundamentalism, and questions of identity and supremacy. Though by no means a new phenomenon, it has given rise to the genre of “post 9/11” fiction, while cyber- and eco-terrorism have been added to the list of imaginations of risk and terror in the twenty-first century. We will discuss examples from contemporary fiction, drama, and film with a special focus on link between gender identity and terrorism in the text, including two novels, Hari Kunzru’s Transmission (2004) and Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2007). Students need to acquire their own copies of the novels. All other material All other material will be made available at the beginning of the semester. |
