The course offers an introduction to institutions, structures and processes of European governance and focuses on contemporary developments of European integration between demands for efficacy and democratic legitimacy. Against the backdrop of theoretical approaches of European Studies, with special attention to the role of interests, institutions and ideas, as well as to structural challenges of the European Union (EU), the course reflects decision-making and organisational processes of European politics. Topics of the course include historical developments of the EU, the role of important actors such as the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the European Parliament, interest groups and member states, as well as the configuration of democratic governance in the European multilevel governance system. Students gain knowledge to systematically reflect developments of the EU, about contemporary reforms, as well as about the functioning and configuration of selected policy areas. Although the working language of the course is English, term papers can of course be submitted also in German. |
