Module topic: Civil Society, Social Movements, and the State in South Korea
In this course, we will explore a variety of developments and characteristics of contemporary Korean civil society and social movements in relation to the state. Developing from a colony to a divided nation, Korea has undergone abrupt shifts of governance, violent political upheavals, brutal war, and compressed economic development, all within the sweep of a half-century. Such a compressed journey to modernization and democratization has inevitably left cracks and crevices that have shaped the role, evolution, and particularities of civil society and social movements. Examining a different topic each week, the course aims to introduce students to a variety of the issues currently abound in Korean civil society. By examining the according continuities and changes, students will be encouraged to formulate critical, balanced, and comparative perspectives on current issues of Korea related to its civil society, social movements, and the state.
