Students will identify the causes of conflicts in Africa, understand its dynamics, and gain insight into the complexities of regional and international actors' efforts to manage and prevent conflicts on the continent. Thus, using selected cases mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa, the seminar will discuss historical and contemporary factors that underline the nature of violent conflicts as well as analyse how actors have continued to respond to these conflicts. Additional attention will be paid to examining the merits and limitations of institutional conflict management tools such as constitutional reforms, federalism and power-sharing arrangements. There would be an oral examination which will combine selected topics from the lecture "International Relations and Global Governance" and an in-depth area from this seminar. The oral examination for both the lecture and seminar will be conducted in English. By registering, students agree to take the exam in English. |
