This seminar explores how emotions—like anger, anxiety, fear, guilt, hope, joy, and shame—have shaped American society and culture. Based on the newest research in the history and sociology of emotion, we'll trace how feelings have become more central to political and cultural life since the postwar period and discuss why this shift matters today. We'll look at how books, films, and other artistic works mediate feelings between individuals, with examples ranging from dystopian novels to horror movies, poetry, and essays, focusing primarily on "new" emotions that have particular relevance in contemporary political discourse, including white guilt and climate anxiety. Students will have the opportunity to suggest works to the syllabus and to present on a topic of their choice.
