The seminar revises the content of the lectures, and introduces basic academic writing skills, as well as specialized skills in writing a quantitative paper. Basic skills in Stata (or R) for data analysis, presentation and regression interpretation will be taught in the seminar and deepened in the tutorial.
In the seminar, students develop a research question for their scientific paper, search for data, compile descriptive statistics, and conduct econometric analysis. Paper topics are assigned at the beginning of the semester. Each topic may be chosen by two students; it will be developed in groups of two (or individually if preferred) during the semester. Individual feedback on topic identification and data analysis is provided in the seminar sessions, as well as in the tutorial. Students apply the data analysis skills acquired in the tutorial to their research question, and write a "working paper". They receive feedback on this working paper from peers and the lecturer in a poster presentation in a conference-like setting. The goal is to write a preliminary stage of a scientific paper (working paper) and to improve this working paper – if desired – for a final version through the feedback. |
