This module critically examines key definitions of work and labour within the broader structural transformations of contemporary capitalism. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, we will explore debates on the evolving nature of work and diverse conceptual frameworks, including commodified and non-commodified work, paid and unpaid work beyond traditional wage labour, domestic and reproductive labour, free and unfree forms of work. These discussions will be situated within wider social processes and spatial arrangements.
A key focus will be on migrant labour and the increasing "migrantization" of specific economic sectors across both developed and developing economies. We will also challenge normative understandings of work as a defining marker of citizenship and individual productivity, considering alternative perspectives that view non-work as a form of emancipatory politics.
Finally, the module will examine historical and contemporary forms of worker organization, unionization, and labour unrest across various industries and geographic contexts, providing a critical lens on resistance and collective action in the world of work. |
