Course Description
Why is the People’s Republic of China (PRC) a global force that simply cannot be ignored? This course provides students with the essential analytical toolkit to decode the internal logic of a system that operates on a fundamentally different frequency than Western liberal democracies. Moving beyond surface-level headlines, we explore the evolution of the Party-State, examining the persistent tensions between centralized authority and local implementation. We will trace the historical arc from the 1949 Revolution through the transformative reforms of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, providing a foundational understanding of how China’s domestic political shifts directly drive its global influence today.
A central pillar of this course is mastering the unique political vocabulary, from Democratic Centralism to High-Quality Development, that defines the nation’s governance. To achieve this, students will engage in a weekly “Reading Between the Lines” briefing using Renmin Ribao (People's Daily). By analyzing the PRC’s flagship newspaper, students will learn to perform real-time discourse analysis, identifying how the Party signals its priorities, manages its legitimacy, and communicates with its 1.4 billion citizens.
The ultimate goal of this course is to move beyond passive observation. Through a blend of historical analysis, institutional mapping, and current events deconstruction, students will learn to be critical analysts of the Chinese Political System.
