Tall tales, fabulous heroines, extraordinary characters, and stories with a twist (or two!) – this seminar about the magnificent British author Angela Carter has it all! A quotation from the highly esteemed Penguin Publishing House sums it up beautifully: “Angela Carter was a storytelling sorceress, the literary godmother of Neil Gaiman, David Mitchell, Audrey Niffenegger, J. K. Rowling, Kelly Link, and other contemporary masters of supernatural fiction.” (https://www.amazon.de/Bloody-Chamber-Stories-75th-Anniversary-Classics/). If you like fairy tales, fantasy, magic realism, postmodernism, this might be just the right seminar for you - but you have to be prepared to read a lot! We will have a close look at some of Carter’s short stories and discuss quite a few text excerpts of her masterpieces such as The Magic Toyshop, Heroes and Villains, The Passion of New Eve, and Nights at the Circus. Please get your own copy (print or eBook) of Nights at the Circus at the start of the semester. You will find the other texts and excerpts in the corresponding Moodle course, once you have successfully registered for this seminar. |
